As sage Neapolitan observer Barringer Fifield has suggested, Naples is a city that was founded, after all, on a song. Music’s hold over the city has remained omnipresent throughout its history. This was never truer than during the seventeenth century, when Naples remained under its Spanish viceroys and became the music capital of Europe. The Spanish rule in Naples, the “capital” of the Kingdom, lasted about four hundred years: from the mid 15th century to the mid 19th century. During this period, many Spanish people passed through Naples, and they managed to implant their culture, habits, language and of course their music there.

The visuals for the artwork are depicted through another aspect of Naples, the Camorra, the Italian organized crime group that grew to power in Naples during the 19th century. The storyline for the supporting animated music film draws inspiration from some of the greatest Mafia romance books of our time, brought to life on film by the team at Actuality Films in NYC who had previously conceptualized and executed the visual elements of Rumbadoodle with the late art director Roshni Mohapatra.
